	Liebe Segelfliegerfreunde!		Dear glider friends!

	Während ich diese Zeilen schreibe, schwimmen unsere Container noch vor der Küste von Marokko. Das letzte Kapitel des Abenteuers Namibia 2017/18 geht voraussichtlich in den ersten Märztagen in Pottendorf, südlich von Wien, zu Ende. Dann erwarten wir die Ankunft der 15 Flugzeuge zurück in ihrer Heimat Europa. Schon jetzt können wir, gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern von ‚streckenflug.at‘ und ‚Mountain Soaring‘ auf eine äußerst erfolgreiche Saison in Kiripotib zurückblicken. Dank unseres neuen Mitarbeiters Alex hat die Betreuung der Piloten und der Flugzeuge am Boden eine neue Dimension erreicht. Abgesehen von der Infrastruktur, deren Erhaltung und Verbesserung er ständig im Auge hat, kümmert er sich am Start darum, dass keine sicherheitsrelevanten Dinge vergessen werden. Er fragt noch einmal nach ob Transponder und Spot eingeschaltet sind, und achtet darauf, dass die notwendige Menge an Trinkwasser mitgeführt wird. Sollte einmal zu wenig Luft im Hauptrad sein - Alex wird es bemerken. Durch seine fachgerechte Einweisung unserer Runway-boys (und –girls) und deren Koordination, fühlt man sich rundum bestens umsorgt. Während man noch seinen obligatorischen après flight drink genießt, ist das Flugzeug bereits gereinigt und in den Überzügen verpackt. Dieser kleine Luxus hat bei all unseren Kunden besonderen Anklang gefunden.		While I’m typing these lines in my computer, our containers are swimming offshore Morocco. The last chapter of our adventure Namibia 2017/18 is expected to be finished during the first days in March in Pottendorf, south of Vienna. That’s when the 15 gliders arrive back in there home Europe. Even now we can look back to an outstanding successful season in Kiripotib, together with our partners from ‚streckenflug.at‘ and ‚Mountain Soaring‘. Thanks to our new crew member Alex, assistance and service for pilots on ground reached a new dimension. Besides the infrastructure, which he permanently keeps up to date, he watches all safty related matters on the grid. He asks the pilots if transponders and Spots are on, and checks if they carry a reasonable amount of drinking water. Should the mainwheel look a bit flat – Alex will notice it. Due to his excellent role model for our runway-boys (and –girls) and his coordination, everyone feels perfectly cared for. While enjoying the obligatory après flight drink, the glider is already being cleaned and packed with covers. This little luxury was especially appreciated by all our customers.

Das Wetter hat es in dieser Saison besonders gut mit uns gemeint. Die üblichen Blauthermik-Lagen Anfang November waren rar. Stattdessen gab es oft homogene Bedingungen, jede Menge angesagte und vollendete 1000km FAI-Dreiecke waren die Folge. Das genossen bei ‚Flying with the Champions‘ insgesamt 13 wissbegierige Teilnehmer, gemeinsam mit unseren Champs. Ein bzw. zwei Wochen standen Kiripotib und Bitterwasser im Zeichen dieser Veranstaltung, die - zumindest in Kiripotib - langsam zur Tradition wird. Das große Engagement unserer Trainees, und die hohe fliegerische, aber auch soziale Kompetenz unserer Coaches, sind die Garantie für ausgezeichnete Stimmung, sowohl im Flugbetrieb als auch beim abendlichen de-briefing. Maximaler Fortschritt inklusive. Zwei- und sogar dreimalige Teilnahmen bestätigen uns, dass wir auf dem richtigen Weg sind.

Weather treated us very nicely this season. We had rarely any of these blue days during early November. Instead we often had homogeneous conditions, lots of declared and completed 1000km FAI-triangles were the result. This fact enjoyed 13 inquisitive participants at ‘Flying with the Champions’, together with our Champs. One resp. two weeks Kiripotib and Bitterwasser were dedicated to this event, which develops slowly – at least in Kiripotib – to a kind of tradition. The great commitment of our trainees, and the high standard of our coaches in soaring skills, but also in social matters guarantee excellent atmosphere, both when flying and during evening de-briefing. Maximum progress included. Second and even third time participants are the confirmation for us that we are doing the right thing.

Natürlich ging es auch nach dem Aufwärmtraining bei ‚Flying with the Champions‘ richtig zur Sache. Abgesehen von einigen nationalen Geschwindigkeits-Rekorden und den üblichen „nach dem Mittagsschläfchen“ 1000er FAI-Dreiecken von Ludwig mit 165km/h+, flog Sybille Andresen zwei Damen Kontinental-Rekorde: 155,7km/h über das 500km Dreieck, und 180km/h über das 100km Dreieck – wir gratulieren ganz herzlich! Außerdem ist Keith Essex mit unserer Antares 23E der bis dato längste Flug von Kiripotib aus gelungen: 1.358,45km – auch ihm gratulieren wir von Herzen!

The warm up ‚Flying with the Champions‘ was just the right start into an outstanding season. Besides some national speed records and the usual “after lunch nap” 1000km FAI-triangle flown by Ludwig with 165kph+, Sybille Andresen beat two women continental records: 155,7kph over the 500km triangle, and 180kph over the 100km triangle – congratulations! Furthermore Keith Essex managed to fly the longest distance ever from Kiripotib: 1.358,45km – congratulations to him as well!

	Auch der Januar zeigte sich von seiner besten Seite, beinahe jeden Tag konnte irgendwer beweisen, dass man immer noch 1000km oder mehr fliegen konnte. In Kiripotib ließen wir die Saison gemeinsam mit der äußerst netten Gruppe aus der Slowakei und mit Mathijs aus Holland ausklingen. Mathijs, bis dahin eigentlich nur engagierter Motorflieger, vollendete nach kurzer Einweisung auf dem Arcus ein paar 1000er und einige flotte 500er Dreiecke gemeinsam mit den Slowaken, eines davon mit heißen 168km/h Schnitt.		Also January showed that it can be nice to glider pilots, almost every day someone could prove that it was possible to fly 1000km or more. In Kiripotib we closed the season with a very nice small group from Slovakia and with Mathijs from the Netherlands. Mathijs, almost only being an enthusiastic pilot on power planes so far, managed to finish some 1000km flights and some speedy 500km triangles together with the Slovaks, one of them with awesome 168kph.

Wie geht es weiter? Sobald die Flugzeuge entladen sind müssen wir sie so schnell wie möglich warten, pflegen und die eventuell notwendigen kleinen Reparaturen durchführen. Ab Mitte März sind zwei Arcus‘ schon wieder im Einsatz, einer in Südfrankreich und einer in Nitra. Matthias Koch übernimmt seinen Arcus M endgültig, der „1“ hat uns dreieinhalb Jahre lang gute Dienste geleistet. Ersetzt wird er voraussichtlich im August dieses Jahres durch einen Neuen, der Arcus M „4“. Ebenfalls im August, so hoffen wir zumindest, können wir unseren neuen Einsitzer, einen Ventus ‚Performance‘ von Schempp-Hirth übernehmen. Gerade rechtzeitig zum Verladen in die Container…

Bei all diesen positiven Entwicklungen und Erfolgen möchten wir als Schlusspunkt noch das Wichtigste setzen: wir blicken auf eine unfallfreie Saison in Kiripotib zurück, dafür möchten wir uns bei allen Piloten ganz herzlich bedanken - machen Sie in der kommenden Saison in Europa in diesem Sinne weiter!

What’s next? As soon as the gliders are out of the containers we start to do the maintenance and possibly necessary small repairs. From middle of March two of the Arcus’ are flying already again, one in Southern France and one in Nitra. Matthias Koch takes finally over his Arcus M from us, our “1” did a good job over the last three and a half years. Expectedly in August this year it will be replaced by a new one, Arcus M “4”. At the same time, hopefully, we may take over our new single seater, a Ventus ‘Performance’ from Schempp-Hirth. Just in time for loading it into the container…
